Shamanism as a Way of Life

The practice of Shamanism dates back tens of thousands of years. It is a practice based on the belief that all things are comprised of energy, and that all healing is done through the soul. Shamanic practitioners utilize ancient techniques to achieve and maintain balance and healing for themselves and their communities.

The practice of Shamanism can be found in many cultures under similar or different names. The term Shamanism refers to a wide range of beliefs and practices involved with connecting and aligning the world of human beings with the Spirit world. The definition of a shaman is commonly understood to mean one who sees with closed eyes. In many Native American cultures, it is a practiced based on healing, and acting as a mediator between the tribal community and the Spirit world. Animals play an important role, acting as guides and protectors.

The most important tool for the Shamanic practitioner is their drum. The use of the drum for ritual and ceremony also dates back to ancient times. The beat is likened to the beat of our mother’s heart while in the womb, and the rhythm of the earth. Drumming is currently being used to effectively treat conditions such as cancer, manic depression, autism, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and many more.

The Shamanic journey is the primary means for accessing information, guidance, and healing for the Shamanic practitioner. All healing and learning is accessed via the journey, and it is one of the most effective ways to make contact with the Spirit realms. Learning to journey takes preparation, respect, and practice.

Shamanism has seen resurgence in recent years as many seek to form personal, spiritual identities and connections beyond the tenets that traditional, organized religions have offered. On an individual level, these practices can be easily integrated into daily life for improved health, emotional balance, and a stronger connection to Spirit. On a community level, these practices promote building relationships and joining together in ritual and ceremony. This type of healing and strengthening can change the world’s culture by reshaping our collective spiritual identities to include a common understanding of the natural and spiritual worlds.
